$96.2 million launch in October 2019.

A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be a
solid debut.’

Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film
to produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it was to make.
Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200 million; Others have it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros.
released the film in 4,102 locations in North America. About 12.5 percent of its
domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.

Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its
total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot,
which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its
domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s
made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice  took third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One
landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No
Evil rounded out the top five.

The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White
Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from just over
1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.

Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist
for theater owners hoping to narrow the box office deficit.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think
pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of
the first movie

Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make something as ‘audacious’ as the first film.
The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as a Joker
superfan, and delved further into the mind
of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for the
murders he committed in the first. It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined
song and dance numbers to old standards. Gaga even released a companion album called ”Harlequin,’ alongside the film.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces,
some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the
first movie. In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore the advice of critics,
especially when it comes to opening their wallets to see revered comic
book characters on the big screen.

‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024
seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to
the theater. They want the tried and true, the familiar.’ 

Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with
the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical.
‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,’ he wrote
on Saturday.

The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse,
then about whether it might send the wrong message to the wrong
type of person. And yet people still flocked to see what the fuss was
about. Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director, and
three wins. It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool &
Wolverine took the crown.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

Now, PMI has developed a range of sticks, which it calls LEVIA,
that do not contain tobacco but a “non-tobacco substrate” infused with nicotine,
with flavours including tobacco, menthol with blueberry and peppermint.

Chief Executive Officer Jacek Olczak said during an investor day presentation that as well as offering another alternative to consumers who
may not wish to use tobacco, the product may avoid the heavy taxes or other controls imposed on its other products.

LEVIA “may not be subject to flavour regulations in some jurisdictions” and “doesn’t fit” in existing fiscal categories, Olczak continued, adding PMI was in discussions with regulators in some target markets on how they
would approach it.

The company advocates for lower taxes for products referred
to by the industry as “reduced risk” compared to traditional cigarettes.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorised PMI
to market IQOS as offering reduced exposure to harmful chemicals versus smoking, though the World Health Organisation says there is
currently no evidence that heated tobacco has lower
health risks than other tobacco products.

A PMI spokesman declined to provide additional details on when and where LEVIA could launch, or what substance replaces the tobacco.

use with major players’ “heat-not-burn” technology –

things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed.
This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed
into the brilliant Bellamy’s. It prospers to this day. Kaspia,
on the other hand, went quiet. Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another
Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under
the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man.
The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps,
indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats
throbs in the background. The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale,
luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via
camera phone. Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better
than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of
such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance
of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour
cream, are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of
oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them
to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each,
is ridiculous. But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if
I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.

One taste is never enough.

The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce
a musical element not present in the first film,
with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive
as people are making it out to be. I love that the film didn’t try
to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they
presented. It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs
or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as
a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical
elements were a lot of fun.’

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and
about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.

It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even — when factoring in the cut taken by
theaters — though Warner Bros. sources claim the number is $375 million.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or
“rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as
fact.’

‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included
with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home
viewing and ancillary run.’

So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed
$51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally
after two weeks of release.

In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally after three days of release.

Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening
sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined
to comment to the publication.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner-
with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips
due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control
of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift
speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect
to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly
after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a
lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The one
thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are,
you’re going to fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix
at the LA premiere September 30

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.
And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and
pay attention to what the fan expectations are,
you’re going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want
to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the
decision to bring the film to Venice. 

Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model is
not broken but Europe’s biggest economy has
lost competitiveness over the past decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Monday.

“We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,” he told
journalists ahead of a Eurogroup meeting.

The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson said on Monday, cutting the forecast from a previous projection of 0.3% growth this year.

If realised, this would be the second consecutive year
of contraction for Germany’s economy, which was the weakest among its large euro zone peers
last year with a 0.3% decline in gross domestic product.

Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side measures to try to return the economy to growth.

“After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,” Lindner said, adding
that the growth initiative was just a first
step for an economic turnaround, “but we have to build on it.”

AMBITION NEEDED

Lindner said “ambition” was needed to keep EU public finances in order,
or to put them back in order where necessary.

“I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,”
Lindner said. “What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.”

Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget plans because he had not had
the chance to talk with his French colleagues yet,
but he would do so on Monday evening.

“We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,” Lindner said.

“We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.”

The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix
as Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn), faced negative reviews from critics before its October 4 release and flopped at the box office.

Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie, said Todd Philips’s new film has ‘no plot’ and admitted he knew
it was ‘going to bomb’ while filming. 

Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said: ‘It’s the worst film ever made.

Gaga told Vogue magazine that she’s been focused on the production side
of her new songs

Gaga released the album’s lead single Disease last month to rave reviews from music critics, but the
song flopped on the Hot 100

‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, “Oh, this was loved by incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of people. This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage! Nihilism!” All these think pieces.

‘And then I think, “What if we went the other way,” and now they have
Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga tap dancing to a point where it’s insane,’ he
continued.

‘It has no plot. We would sit there, me and these other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working
at the Arkham Asylum, and I would turn to one
of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go, “What the f*** is this?” And
they’d go, “This is going to bomb, man.” I go, “This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.”

‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go,
“What is the plot? Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?” It’s not even hate-watchable.
That’s how terrible it is.’

MYKOLAIV, Ukraine, March 29 (Reuters) – A Russian rocket hit the regional administration building in the southern Ukrainian port city of
Mykolaiv on Tuesday, trapping 11 people under the rubble, the local
governor Vitaliy Kim said.

An image showed a large hole in the side of the building.
On Tuesday, Reuters witnesses saw the destruction from a distance
and ambulances and fire engines heading to the scene. The area was cordoned off by Ukrainian authorities.

Russian forces have attacked Ukraine’s southern ports including Kherson, Odesa, Mykolaiv and Mariupol
as they try to cut Ukraine off from the Black Sea and establish a land corridor
from Russia to Crimea, the peninsula Russia seized in 2014.

“They destroyed half of the building, got into my office,”
Kim said. “The entire supply of IQOS (electronic cigarettes) was lost.”

“Most (people) miraculously escaped – eight civilians are now under the rubble and we hope that (they) will be pulled out,”
he said, adding three military personnel were also trapped.

Kim said there was an upside to the strike – it suggested Russia had
given up trying to take over the city.

Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a “special military operation” to
disarm and “denazify” its neighbour. It denies targeting civilians.
Ukraine and the West say Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an unprovoked war.

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time,
an offer you simply didn’t refuse. Providing, of course,
that the bill was on someone else. Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t
come cheap. There may have been other things on the menu, but no
one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are few
better dishes on earth…only the price, at just under £150, is ridiculous’

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two
decades back. And that site, hidden down a
smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who
used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.

Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair
backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved
hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near
empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting
of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is
broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats
throbs in the background. The whole place is scented with gilded
ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty,
clad in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar
and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.
Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily,
glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent
charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu
performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream,
are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar,
gently saline, raises them to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if I
could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.
One taste is never enough.

Five years have passed since the triumphant opening of Joker at the Venice
Film Festival. I still vividly remember reeling out of a morning screening, dazzled less by the unforgiving glare
of the Venetian sun than by the movie we’d just been shown.

Last night, here in Venice, came the world premiere of the sequel, Joker:
Folie a Deux The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once
more in the title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose we must call the love interest,
although that would undervalue her wonderful performance.

The film is audaciously different in style from the original, not
quite as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the same. 

It begins with a kind of sinister jauntiness with a Joker animation in the style of a Tom &
Jerry cartoon, to show that since the events of the first movie, Arthur Fleck along with his murderous alter ego has become a cultural phenomenon in Gotham City.
There has even been a TV movie about him.

suppose we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her wonderful performance

and will premiere at the 81st annual Venice Film Festival

But Arthur is behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged sane enough to stand trial
for murder, and in the meantime enjoying his celebrity status both with fellow prisoners and even the
warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Lady Gaga plays Lee, a fellow inmate on her way, we suppose, to becoming Joker’s
girlfriend Harley Quinn. The pair hit it off at a music therapy
class, and are soon mutually smitten, but Lee makes it
clear that she loves the dangerously charismatic Joker, ‘clown prince
of crime’, not the gloomily introspective Arthur. 

Indeed, identity confusion is the theme of this film, which
delves even deeper than the original into schizophrenia
and other types of mental illness.

It’s been said that Folie a Deux is a musical.
It’s not, but music looms large as an expression of Arthur and
Lee’s burgeoning love for one another. It is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953
classic The Band Wagon that Lee, who claims to have been imprisoned
for arson, sets fire to their prison wing.

The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to
escape, yet Phillips and his co-writer Scott Silver toy with our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate which way
the narrative is going to go, it confounds us by wheeling off in another direction. 

The music is a constant, though, with Lady Gaga giving her interpretation of lovely old Burt Bacharach and
even Motown numbers, and Phoenix more than holding his own. There are also a couple
of swooning dance routines that make Arthur and Lee look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling
and Emma Stone in La La Land.

Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance with a
smug interviewer played by Steve Coogan, it is time for the trial,
with all of Gotham gripped by the subject of multiple personality disorder. 

Is Arthur the defendant accused of five murders, or is it Joker?
His kindly lawyer (Catherine Keener) wants to make clear it
is Arthur; Lee just as urgently wants him to identify as Joker.

For those cinema-goers who consider Joker: Folie a Deux to be just another unnecessary Batman spin-off, you should maybe think again 

All this is compellingly directed by Phillips, and superbly acted by Phoenix especially, in a
role for which he seems custom-made, but by Gaga too.
We’ve known since A Star is Born in 2018 that she can act,
but she really is terrific in a bad-girl role. They’d have loved her at St Trinians. 

As for those cinema-goers who consider Joker: Folie a Deux to be
just another unnecessary Batman spin-off, you should maybe think again. 

This might not quite be in the top rank of films about mental illness, alongside all-time greats such as
Psycho and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. But it’s not too far off.

Attending the event, which took place during the 81st
Venice International Film Festival, the siblings stood side-by-side while smiling for photos at
Sala Grande. 

Folie à Deux will see Joaquin, 49, reprise his role as Arthur Fleck AKA Joker and
is set for release on October 4.

The actor wore a smart black tuxedo with a white shirt, bow tie and a pair of sunglasses
for the hotly-anticipated event.  

Rain, 51, wore a brown velvet gown and donned stylish oversized shades
as she posed with her brother.

The film is the much-anticipated follow-up to 2019’s Academy Award-winning Joker, which
earned more than $1 billion at the global box office and remains the highest-grossing R-rated film
of all time.

The second instalment finds Arthur Fleck institutionalised at Arkham awaiting trial for
his crimes as Joker.

‘While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only
stumbles upon true love, but also finds the
music that’s always been inside him,’ a press release shared.

The last time that Joaquin played The Joker, Arthur Fleck,
he had to drop three and a half stone. He went on a diet of lettuce,
asparagus and apples. 

Five years later he has returned to the Oscar-winning role again in – and
says that he had to lose almost the same amount of weight once more, and is never doing it
again.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival he said: ‘I’m not going to
talk through specifics of the diet, because I just think nobody wants to hear that.

‘But this time, it felt a bit more complicated just because there was so much dance rehearsal
that we were doing, which I didn’t have last time. 

‘It felt a bit more difficult, but it is safe. But you’re right, I’m now 49, I
probably shouldn’t do this again. This is probably it for me.’ 

The actor, 49, wore a smart black tuxedo with a white shirt,

He added: ‘I know I was responsible last time for talking about it, but
it’s difficult to do so. 

‘That becomes your obsession because you’re working the entire time to get to a certain weight.

‘So then you end up talking about it, and then it just
sounds like an actor going on and on about how much weight they lost.

‘By the end of that run I was so sick of myself and angry at myself for
making such a big deal about that part, because you just do what you’re ****ing
supposed to do. So this time I was like, ‘I’m not going to do that’.’
